Holding Her Everywhere

When my daughter learned how to walk, I was excited, over joyed for her learning her new skills.  This was because I didn’t know much.  What anyone failed to tell me was the challenges that I would face because she wanted to walk everywhere.

Where I live, it’s easy just walking three blocks to the major shopping area to buy items for everyday.  Well it was easy.  Now that she wants to walk everywhere, the stroller is out of the question.  I can’t even mention the word without her throwing a tantrum.  I hear this for the next 5 minutes at the top of her lungs.

Aside from forcing her in the stroller (which I never do), we walk.  Now I’ve learned to just leave the stroller behind.  It made no sense to push a stroller that she is never going to sit in, and to hold her hand the same time.  What this also meant that I didn’t have any additional means to carry anything that I bought from the store.  Okay, I’ll manage — I have two hands.

WRONG!  I don’t have two hands.  When she gets scared or tired or wants to be close, I end up holding her.  Many times I’ve held her for 3/4 of a mile while going to church.  Have I tried to put in the stroller.  Yup.  Did she enjoy it.  Nope.  Did I enjoy it. Nope.

So lately, I have been relying on my husband to pick up some things before he gets in.  But it’s not something that I like to do.  I know he’s tired and stressed, and the last thing he wants to do is go shopping.  He may tell me he doesn’t mind, but it’s the things that aren’t said that speaks the loudest.

So today, I’m going to try something different.  I’m going to bring a big enough bag with me so that I can carry her, and carry the items from the store.  I doubt that it will be easy, but maybe we can all win in this situation.

When your child learned how to walk, did they still insist on being carried some places?
