This week for Life Through My Lens Thursday, I’m sharing a place with you that I always love going to. Manhattan China Town. Here are a few pictures that I took while walking with the family. What really brings this place to life for me, is knowing that not much has changed from the first time I visited this place.
Of course now, things are changing tourism has left its mark on the area, and the nearby surrounding area (Little Italy) is getting smaller, as this place is getting bigger.
[Tweet “Acting like a tourist in your own city, can help you appreciate what you have around you.”]
What I love about roaming in NYC is that if we take the time out to act like tourists-at least for a moment, is really fun. Also, I’m trying to slow down and see things through my children’s eyes, after all, I have seen all of this many times, but never had I thought to take pictures of it.
Now that I have it on camera (was just about to say film) I can appreciate how different, yet amazing all parts of our city is.
Notes about these pictures:
- I used my iPhone5 to take all the photos. (left the big girl at home for this).
- All pictures were taken while walking (no, really….I didn’t get a chance to stop walking).
What I like:
- I’m really feeling black and white for these pictures. It really feels like home for me when I see these pictures.
So tell me: What do you like about these pictures? Have to been to Chinatown in Manhattan? How about any Chinatown? Leave your response in the comments below! (Also, if you really like it, why not share this post 🙂 )
I am jealous that you have an iphone and can take such beautiful pictures my android sucks when it comes to pictures. I love taking a tour of my town so many things to discover and do.
I’ve seen some of the cameras on Android phones and they are pretty sweet. I’m questioning my phone now since it’ll be “old” in a few months.
Still–I plan on holding into this one until I can’t anymore.
Wow is all I have to say. These pictures are amazing! I think I’ve been to Chinatown once before, but I’ve also been to the city several times. It’s been a while though. I love love love the black and white. Did I just catch that your husband is Asian? How beautiful. If so, I don’t think I knew that until right now! I love how you were able to capture the city life in what looks like an old fashioned sort of way. 🙂
Thank you Brittnei. Yup, my husband is Chinese and our kids are mixed.
Chinatown is an awesome place to hang out (of course I feel like this in every area of Manhattan) because I think that every part brings a unique perspective of what “city living” is about. Yet, it’s all our stories–just shared differently. 🙂
Also, thank you about the black and white, I was debating about keeping it in color but I felt the character of the neighborhood deserved black and white.
I love the black and white choice, very nice! I am a fan of chinatown, I used to spend a lot of time there with my husband when we were kids. We used to walk from Century 21 all the way uptown to Times Square for no reason, other than being broke and wanting to spend lots of time together. Chinatown used to be my favorite place to get the fashions! Thanks for sharing 🙂
It is a great place to hang out. We sometimes walked from there to union square to buy DVDs (when Virgin Records were there). It was great to walk in and out of neighborhoods and just experience the changes with each step.
The photos are gorgeous! I love the black and white for them. I’ve never been to any China Town. The only way I’ve seen China Town is in a movie but this brings a new perspective.
Thank you Carla! I am very interested in different cultural neighborhoods, so I love to go out of NYC to experience them. In this case–I never really have to go far. Chinatown is just one spot but NYC is so full of character.
Stunning pictures! I love the contrast and all the detail captured!
Thank you so much Jessica!
Your photos are stunning. I’m enjoying your blog! Thanks for visiting me 🙂
Thank you so much Jacqueline! I really enjoy your blog too!
LOVE Chinatown! It was the first place I tried duck and you’re so right you really do feel like you escaped to an old world. Great shots, the black and white made it that much sweeter.
Your photography is breathtaking! Ohhh my goodness. Yes.
Thank you so much!
I’ve never been to Chinatown…but I’ve seen many pictures via social media. This is one of the beautiful things about blogging, I can sit at my computer in Trinidad and learn of places far, far away. I adore your black and whites…there is something about black and white photography that captures me as well…the pictures take on a whole new meaning.
Visiting from SITS. Have a great weekend! 🙂
Thank you Tami! I love black and white photography! I have to be careful not to make all my pictures black and white!
I love Chinatown and visit whenever I am able. My oldest son lives in Brooklyn and works in the city, so we usually take a jaunt through at least once. Great photos and black and white is so very nostalgic.

That’s great Barbara! Have you been to Brooklyn Chinatown as well? I have yet to make it to Flushing Queens. I’m told that one is really large!
